A towering giant of a plant, Echium pininana never fails to excite gasps of awe from onlookers!From humble, low rosettes of hairy leaves soar great pinnacles of flowers that can reach over 3 metres high! The funnel shaped blue flowers are enormously popular with bees and buzz with activity on sunny days.Although it’s a short-lived perennial or biennial, this exceptional plant is well worth growing and plants often successfully self sow, resulting in small colonies of new seedlings around the parent. One of the hardiest of Echiums from the Canary Islands, it will happily grow in mild climates in the UK with a thick mulch to protect the crown over winter. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Ultimate height: up to 4m (13ft). Ultimate spread: 1m (3.2ft).
